Members of the British Association of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons (BAAPS) have issued a warning against stem cell breast enhancement procedures being offered by private clinics in the United Kingdom. The warning issued at the recent BAAPS annual meeting, says that stem cell breast enhancements are unproven and should not be offered commercially.
Stem cell breast enhancement involves using fat liposuctioned from the patient’s abdomen or thighs to build up the breast. The BAAPS says more testing is needed to establish the procedure’s safety before it is used on healthy women. Private London clinics have been advertising stem cell breast enhancement for some time now and are challenging the association’s warning.
The data shows that the procedure appears to be effective in cancer patients. However, researchers said that at least five to ten years of studying should be collected before the technique is consider safe for use in cosmetic surgery.
